Tuition Benefits
For families, tuition benefits for your kids is one of the most important considerations when deciding whether or not to apply – or say yes to an offer. While salaries matter, one of the big differences as a teaching family is whether (and how many) of your children’s school fees are covered. And whether or not they’re considered a taxable benefit.
Let’s take a look at some of the most common tuition benefit types to expect within international schools. So you know what to look out for when comparing offers.
What Tuition Benefits Schools Typically Offer
Full Tuition Coverage (All Children)
The most generous option (and usually the rarest!). Some schools do cover all dependent children with no caps or restrictions. This type of tuition is less common today, but can still be found in certain destinations or school groups (like QSI).
Percentage Discounts
Instead of full tuition, some schools offer staff children a percentage reduction (often 70–95%). While this is helpful, make sure you calculate your total out-of-pocket costs before an accepting an offer – and look into the cost of living in the city to make sure you can afford to live (and hopefully save!).
Full Tuition for One or Two Children
The most common benefit. A great option for families with one or two kids, but if you’ve got three or more expect to pay full fees (or at least partial if you can negotiate it) for any additional kids. Depending on the cost of tuition (and your salary), this may mean the offer isn’t financially viable for your family.
No Tuition Coverage
While it’s rare for international schools to offer no tuition coverage, it’s not unheard of. These schools also won’t always guarantee a place for staff kids, making it difficult for families to accept. It’s likely your CV won’t be considered if you disclose dependents – as they’re likely to prefer teachers without kids.

Tuition Fee Flexibility
Many schools have strict rules around tuition benefits, but others can be more flexible. Be upfront about your situation and don’t be afraid to ask questions – it’s better than wasting your (and the school’s) time.
“The best experiences we’ve had when applying at schools is when they’re transparent about their tuition benefits. E.g. we only offer tuition for two kids, will that be an issue?”

No, there aren’t usually regional differences to consider when it comes to tuition benefits at international schools. Typically, whether or not a school offers tuition benefits is up to each school and the policies they set. But there are some commonalities. Let’s take a look.
Asia & Middle East
Many schools offer full or partial coverage (usually for up to two children but sometimes more).
Europe
Benefits are often less generous overall, but tuition benefits are possible at some schools.
Africa & South America
Packages vary widely. Some schools are extremely generous (full coverage for multiple dependents).
Watch Out for Taxable Benefits on Tuition Benefits
In some countries, children’s tuition is treated as a taxable benefit-in-kind.
That means the value of the tuition (or discount) is added to your salary for tax purposes — even though you’re not receiving it as cash. The result? A much higher tax bill, which can significantly impact your take-home pay.
What Families Need to Know:
- Check the rules by country: Tax treatment varies widely. It’s more common in parts of Europe (like Germany and Switzerland), and some Latin American countries.
- Ask if the school covers the tax: Some international schools will pay the tax liability on your behalf (“grossing up”), while others leave it to you.
- Factor it into affordability: A “free” tuition place can actually cost thousands once taxed, especially if you have multiple kids.
Top Tip: Always ask for a sample contract or breakdown of taxable benefits before accepting a job. Talk to other teachers at the school to confirm how it works in practice.

Discounts
If percentage-based, what’s your real cost?

Security
Is there guaranteed availability for your children?
For teaching families, tuition benefits can make or break whether a school is affordable. Even a strong salary may not stretch far if you’re paying full tuition for multiple children.
By asking the right questions early and comparing full packages (not just salaries), you’ll have a clearer picture of whether a role is truly sustainable for your family.
