Safety, Adaptability & Cost of Living

  • Safety: Fair – Accra is generally considered safe, but keep an eye out for things like pickpocketing, scams, and opportunistic theft, especially at crowded markets. Violent crime is rare in expat neighbourhoods.
  • Adaptability: Moderate – Accra offers a friendly, English-speaking environment for international families. Be aware that it can be a big adjustment when it comes to to infrastructure challenges (like inconsistent utilities) and traffic. Expect a slower pace of services (which requires some patience and flexibility!).
  • Cost of Living: Moderate to High – Local goods and services are usually pretty affordable, but imported items, and accommodation in secure expat areas can be expensive. If you want to maintain a Western-style standard of living expect a higher cost of living.
